Housing is a critical element of a livable community, affecting both the quality of life of its residents and the overall well-being of the community itself. This Web site provides a variety of information and assistance related to housing and housing-related topics:
- Residents seek appropriate living environments—choice in options, as well as
affordability—in order to meet their needs and their preferences for the routine activities of
daily life. A strong preference of older people and people with disabilities is to remain
living where they are for as long as possible—to safely and successfully age in place. When
that choice is no longer possible, people and families wish to find alternative housing that
truly suits their overall circumstances.
The important decision about where to live in the later years is a complex one. Housing Options for Older People in New York State provides several categories of assistance:- information and strategies to help older people make aging in place a safe, successful, long-term option;
- descriptions of the major types of retirement housing that are available for older people in New York State; and
- information on 20 topics that can help people be more informed consumers when making decisions to relocate from home into a retirement housing option.
- Significant demographic and social change is altering the profile of our communities; and
economic, environmental, and other forces are having major impacts on quality of life. In the

Housing, Planning, and Zoning
Initiative will assist communities in using an inclusive planning approach to better plan
for the housing and community needs of their older people, younger people with disabilities,
families, caregivers, and the community as a whole.
The Initiative will focus on housing, universal design, planning, land use, zoning, energy alternatives and efficiency, green building, mobility, and transportation. The initiative's goal is to facilitate the ability of communities to take active steps to create more livable communities. - Different types of housing-related information are valuable to policy makers, service providers, academics, professionals in a variety of disciplines, local officials, community leaders, and consumers. Housing Resources provides extensive information, as well as links to informative Web sites and resources.
