Shared Living Residence
This can be a single-family home or apartment that is shared by a small group (3 to 10) of unrelated persons who share the living expenses and tasks of running the household. Residents can be all older people or a combination of older people and younger people. Residents have private bedrooms and either private or shared baths. A major benefit of this option is that residents live together as a family, sharing the common kitchen, dining room, and living room, as well as the mutual companionship of shared recreational and socialization activities. This supportive environment supports continued aging in place in a community setting. Typically, a shared living residence is owned/sponsored by a community organization, and residents pay monthly charges that cover rent, utilities, food, and upkeep. Sometimes, a "housemother" or staff person will live on-site to help with meals, housekeeping, laundry, and arranging transportation and activities. Typically, a shared living residence does not require licensure by the New York State Health Department because the sponsoring organization does not provide personal care or health-related services. If residents become frail, they may be able to privately purchase higher levels of care from a community services agency.
