Nursing Home

Nursing homes provide skilled nursing services and chronic custodial care to people of all ages. They may include private or shared rooms and private or shared baths. Residents must be formally assessed to be deemed eligible for nursing home care, and residents are provided with all the housing, services, personal care, skilled nursing care, and therapy they need for as long as they are needed. Nursing homes are licensed and regulated by the New York State Department of Health. Monthly charges, which cover all housing, residential services, personal care, health-related services, skilled nursing care, and therapy can be paid with private resources or, for individuals whose income and assets are below a specified level, charges are paid through the Medicaid program.

New York State's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which is located in the State Office for the Aging, provides community volunteer Ombudsmen who operate under the direction and training of an Ombudsman Coordinator in each county-based Office for the Aging. Ombudsmen advocate on behalf of elderly residents in nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living-receiving complaints, investigating problems, and resolving issues on behalf of elderly residents and their families.
