Family Type Home

Family Type Homes are typically single-family homes in which the homeowner (an individual, husband and wife, or family with children) provides supportive services, socialization, meals, supervision, and personal care to four or fewer adults who are unrelated to the homeowner/operator. The benefits for the resident include (1) an opportunity to live as part of a family when frailties compromise an ability to continue living independently, and (2) an opportunity to continue living in an age-integrated environment in a community setting. Rent and care are included in one monthly charge. Monthly charges may be paid with private resources, or those below a specified income level are eligible for subsidization through federal and state Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. Operating certificates for Family Type Homes are issued by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), and provision of this supportive housing environment is supervised by local Social Services Departments/Districts under the direction of OCFS. In addition, the New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is available to help residents address concerns related to their care, rights, and overall quality of life at the home. To identify and contact the Ombudsman in your county, you can find a list of Ombudsmen by county or you can call the New York State Senior Citizens' Help Line at 1-800-342-9871.
