Dementia Care Facility/Wing/Unit
These multiunit facilities, which can include private rooms, studio apartments, or full apartments, are licensed by the New York State Department of Health as Enriched Housing, Adult Homes, or Assisted Living; and all residents have Alzheimer's Disease or another dementia condition. The physical layout (interior and exterior) of the facility and the facility's staffing, programmatic aims, and care plans are designed to address the needs of residents with cognitive impairments. Facilities provide the services and care provided in Enriched Housing and Adult Homes, and operators may apply for certification to provide the higher levels of care found in Basic, Enhanced, and Special Needs Assisted Living. Monthly charges may be paid with private resources or subsidized through the federal and state Supplemental Security Income program.
Increasingly, senior housing, supportive senior housing, and Enriched Housing developments are converting a floor, unit, or wing of the building to accommodate residents with dementia, including specialized programming, staff training, and physical designs. Often, residents in the dementia floor, unit, or wing interact with the rest of the residents at meals and in socialization activities. By providing residents with an option to transfer from their general apartment into the special floor, unit, or wing, these developments 1.)allow residents to age in place in a familiar living environment rather than relocating to another facility, and 2)allow residents with dementia to continue interacting with unimpaired residents in a normalized living environment.
If the development provides residents in the special floor, unit, or wing with personal care services, that part of the development must be licensed by the New York State Department of Health as an Enriched Housing Program, Adult Home, or Assisted Living.
