Ask about . . . Eligibility Preferences
People are placed on waiting lists in the order in which their completed applications are received and approved. Typically, openings are offered to people who are at the beginning of the list.
Some developments have different-sized units (one-bedroom, two-bedroom, one-bedroom with den, etc.), and prices vary according to size. These developments might maintain separate waiting lists for different-sized units.
Some developments have a certain number of living units that are designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. These developments might maintain a separate waiting list for individuals with qualifying disabilities.
Some developments, in order to receive government construction funding, may designate a certain number of living units for a "special needs" population or for frail older people, and a separate waiting list will be maintained for these units.
Some developments will give preferences to specific categories of people on the waiting list and, regardless of their place on the list, these people will have first choice when vacancies occur. Examples of preference categories include homeless individuals, people who are currently living in substandard housing, people who are currently paying more than 50 percent of their income on housing, veterans, working families with household income below a specified amount, and people who are residents of the county or town in which the development is located.
Eligibility preferences CANNOT be given on the basis of gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, race, or country of origin.
