Programs For Families & Caregivers
Caregiver Assistance
- Every New York State county has a local Office for
the Aging that serves caregivers. Contact your local office and ask for the Caregiver
Coordinator if you need assistance.
- The New York Elder Caregiver Support Program
assists informal caregivers - spouses, adult children, other family members, friends and
neighbors to care for older persons who need help with everyday tasks. Some local programs also
assist grandparents and other relative caregivers of children.
- Resources for caregivers with a loved one in a
long term care facility.
The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is an
advocate and resource for persons who reside in nursing homes, assisted living residences or
adult care facilities. Ombudsman help residents, their families, and former caregivers
understand and exercise their rights to quality care and quality of life. The program advocates for residents by receiving, investigating and resolving complaints made by or on behalf of
residents, and by promoting the development of resident and family councils.
- Resources for Caregivers caring for those with
developmental disabilities. Many caregivers, including aging caregivers, are caring for a
person with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- New "Videocaregiving" Website Launched for Caregivers

'streaming' visual educational material to family caregivers. This website's videos include
real people in real situations so you hear first hand from caregivers and people with
Alzheimer's disease discuss their feelings and situations. The site also has tips and resources to help people with their caregiving roles and responsibilities.
